My life is full of results that I’ve created.
What I choose to, and take time to, focus on generates certain results – every time. My brain and subconscious bring me more of what I focus on.
The RAS (reticular activating system) in my brain takes its direction from my habitual thoughts and actions. What I spend the most time thinking about and acting on continually sends commands to the RAS. It finds ways to make sure that I get more of what I’m thinking about.
In many ways, the RAS functions like a computer. GIGO is an acronym that applies to the RAS as much as to a computer. “Garbage In – Garbage Out” (GIGO) is an unfortunate consequence of garbage thoughts. Garbage thoughts include thoughts like the following:
- I’m not good enough.
- People are always ripping me off.
- Watch out for lawyers (insert salesperson or any other profession) – they’re only out to rip you off or take advantage of you.
- That’s too expensive.
- I can’t afford that.
- I’m always late.
- Rich people are greedy and don’t care about anyone but themselves.
- He’s always talking down at me.
- Why are all the nice girls taken?
- My wife just keeps gaining weight.
- My husband always works late and doesn’t seem to care about the kids.
You get the idea, right?
Everything you say and think gets registered by the RAS. It takes everything at face value. It makes a poor audience for a comedian because it has no idea how to take a joke!
Bob Proctor talks about this in the following quote from The Secret:
Most people have a goal of getting out of debt. That’ll keep you in debt forever. Whatever you’re thinking about you will attract. You’ll say, ‘But it’s get out of debt.’ I don’t care if it’s get out or get in, if you’re thinking debt you’re attracting debt. Set up an automatic debt repayment program and then start to focus on prosperity.
Again, whatever you are focusing on, the RAS, in your brain, is going to bring you every time. Avoid thinking about “debt” and think about what you really desire, like having plenty of money. Avoid thinking about “losing weight” and think about that lovely body that fits perfectly into the lovely clothes you’d like to wear.
If you’re still working out the details of what you desire, focusing on gratitude for all that you have is a great place to begin.
Each morning as you choose how your day is going to go, focus on what you’re thankful for, remember that what you focus on during that time is an opportunity to set the RAS on a mission of creating more of those things in your life.
Be thankful, today. Then, make it a daily – or even an hourly – routine to focus on what’s working in your life.
Remember to say “thank you” out loud to those people that matter to you. Also, say it to those people with whom you want to improve your relationship. There is always something you can say “thank you” for. Even if it is “thank you” for the lessons they taught you.
